Great quote on fiction

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Spin class on Sat. morning

Showed up before 7:00 AM. Got on the spin bike by 7:00 ish. First hour and a half (or a tad more) was at our own pace (no class, just show up, ride and watch the TdF where Lance gets his fifth win.)

Then short break and 2 hour class with instructors.

Uff and Daa.

Thighs are sore... mostly did my own thing as the instructors did things that either a) don't pertain to outdoor riding or b) are actually bad for you.

No heart data as my hr monitor picked up Bjorn's data and not mine.
Generally ran a 120 to 140 range with some minor spikes.

Overall a good experience mostly kept my reistance equal to road or better, but did start cramping near the end. Most likely an issue with bike fit, my fitness, etc.

Getting Safari Books Online onto the Kindle 2

O.K. layout wise it still doesn't look great. But if you're in a pinch and need to get to your Safari library.

1) Go to the Kindle 2 web browser (under Experimental)
2) Press the Menu button
3) select Use Advanced Mode
4) Go back into the Menu
5) Select Settings
6) Select Enable Javascript

Now you're set just go to m.safaribooksonline.com to access the site.
You might have to play with font size but overall it works O.K.

Thanks to Mr. O'Reilly for Twittering the instructions in response to my question!

diet/exe reboot

So starting on Mar. 1 rebooted the diet and started to get serious.
4/1 start weight - 236 (uff and da!)
4/7 weight - 234.8 (running average, 1.6 down for the week, yay!)

Shooting for 2 pounds a week on the running average (read up on the Hacker's Diet http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/www/hackdiet.html for more info).

Also went for a short run (2.12 miles) today. Had to walk parts, so it took about 28 minutes. Given I haven't run since last July... not great but could be worse.

Ave HR: 149
Max HR: 165

Score card for week 1.
Hacker's Diet: 3 red, 3 green, 1 yellow
No S Diet: 3 red, 4 green
Exercise: 6 red, 1 green.

Red - missed goals (kcal intake 2500 or higher, etc.0
Yellow - sub optimal but "o.k." (kcal intake 2000 to 2500 or exercise skip day)
Green - goals met (kcal intake below 2000)

No S Diet is good if you don't want to count calories, but want to do some "life hacking". More info at www.nosdiet.com
